Devotion: Fixing Our Thoughts on What Is Excellent
Scripture Reference
Philippians 4:8 (New Living Translation): “Fix your thoughts on what is true, and honorable, and right, and pure, and lovely, and admirable. Think about things that are excellent and worthy of praise.”
Reflection
The Apostle Paul’s words in Philippians 4:8 (NLT) remind us that our thought life shapes our spiritual life. What we dwell on influences our emotions, our actions, and ultimately our character. In a world filled with distractions, negativity, and fear, Paul calls believers to intentionally direct their minds toward what is good and praiseworthy. This is not a passive suggestion but an active discipline: to fix our thoughts, to anchor them in truth and beauty rather than in worry or despair (Laurie, 2025; Crysti, 2025).
When we choose to meditate on what is honorable and pure, we cultivate peace and resilience. Our minds become less vulnerable to anxiety and more attuned to God’s presence. This practice is not about ignoring reality but about reframing it through the lens of God’s goodness. By focusing on what is admirable and lovely, we align our hearts with Christ’s perspective, allowing His Spirit to renew our outlook daily.
Application
This verse offers a practical invitation: pause and notice what is excellent in your life. It may be the kindness of a friend, the beauty of creation, or the quiet strength of faith. By filtering our thoughts through Paul’s list—true, honorable, right, pure, lovely, admirable—we build a spiritual habit that strengthens our witness and deepens our joy. As Augustine once said, “Such as we are, such are the times” (Laurie, 2025). Our times are shaped by the thoughts we nurture.
Prayer
Lord, thank You for the gift of Your Word that guides our minds and hearts. Help us to fix our thoughts on what is true, honorable, right, pure, lovely, and admirable. Teach us to see the excellent and praiseworthy in each day, and to live with gratitude and peace. Amen.
