Introduction
The accelerating pace of technological, medical, and social change in the twenty-first century has generated unprecedented opportunities for human flourishing. Yet these same developments raise profound ethical challenges that demand careful reflection. The task before scholars, policymakers, and communities is not merely to anticipate emerging dilemmas, but to cultivate frameworks of justice, responsibility, and human dignity that can guide decision-making in uncertain terrain (Jonas, 1984; Rawls, 1971).
Technological Innovation and the Paradox of Progress
Artificial intelligence, neurotechnology, and automation promise efficiency, expanded access to knowledge, and improved healthcare outcomes. However, these tools also risk entrenching systemic inequities. For instance, algorithmic bias in hiring or medical diagnostics demonstrates how technological systems can reproduce social prejudices rather than dismantle them (O’Neil, 2016; Noble, 2018). The ethical imperative, therefore, is to ensure that innovation is accompanied by accountability, transparency, and inclusivity (Floridi & Cowls, 2019).
Genetic Editing and the Question of Justice
The advent of CRISPR and related gene-editing technologies has opened new possibilities for eradicating hereditary diseases. Yet the same tools raise concerns about the commodification of human life and the potential normalization of “enhancement” beyond therapeutic purposes (Baylis, 2019).
